Antique Car Show & Shine Supports Building Futures

The sun was shining and so were the cars at the Halifax Antique Car Club’s 56th annual Show & Shine held on July 21st at the Halifax Exhibition Centre. It was a hot and humid day outside, but inside there was a glimpse of days gone by, as ultra-cool vehicles showed themselves off in all their vintage glory. There were an impressive 115 vehicles on display from around the region, in every shape, size and color, including the oldest car, a 1926 Model T Touring. Some of the other older vehicles included a 1927 Ford T Roadster and a 1928 Model A Phaeton. Some of the “newer” cars included a 1977 Honda Civic.

Car enthusiasts of all ages walked around, taking in the beautifully restored and cared-for vehicles, while owners proudly shared information about their prized possessions. In addition to the vintage vehicles on display, the event included a 50/50 draw, a baked goods table, silent auction, bingo, and cake cutting. Plaques were given to the Top 25 cars and Dash Plaques for the first 100 cars to recognize their participation.

The annual car show is organized by the Halifax Antique Car Club, a non-profit group established in 1963. Members of the club – just over 70 at this time – pay annual dues and meet throughout the year. Members can also participate in club meetings and activities, including the annual Show & Shine. All proceeds from the Show & Shine support the Building Futures Employment Society, a non-profit charitable organization providing employment, vocational, and recreational services for people with intellectual disabilities. Located in Lower Sackville, Building Futures operates four social enterprises, including: Assembly Plus, which offers assembly, packaging, shipping and receiving services; Futures Birds, which creates unique metal outdoor art for gardens, patios and lawns; Futures Copy Shop, offering printing and copying services; and Futures Café, a coffee shop, café and catering service. Although the final numbers are still being calculated, the Show & Shine organizers expect $7000 will be donated to this worthwhile community organization.
