Rediscovering our Community’s Hidden Gems

Summer is in full swing, and it’s time to enjoy the weather and be outdoors. We are fortunate in our community to have easy access to parks and walking trails, without the hassle of travelling far from home. This is the time to (re)discover places such as Hemlock Ravine Park and DeWolf Park - two places that are in - or close to - our own backyard.

Hemlock Ravine Park

Nestled at the end of Kent Avenue, off the Bedford Highway, is Hemlock Ravine Park, a must-visit place, especially in the summer. Many people know about Prince’s Lodge, the round house built by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent in the 1790s for his mistress, Madame de St. Laurent. Perhaps lesser known, but equally captivating, is the story of the heart-shaped pond at the entrance of Hemlock Ravine Park, which was also built by the Prince for St. Laurent. Park signage indicates that the pond was much larger and oval-shaped when it was built. It also formed part of a large garden area. In 1869, the pond was reshaped into a heart by the Duke of Kent’s grandson, Prince Arthur, and has since served as a symbol of their love – and, no doubt, the love of many others.

Walking around the pond, which is often visited by ducks, birds, squirrels, and probably many who know its origin, you can stop, sit on a bench, and imagine the romantic history of this unique place. Surrounded by the peacefulness and tranquility of the pond and the park setting, it’s hard to believe you are just minutes from the busy Bedford Highway.

The park has trails of varying lengths that wind their way through the trees and brush. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the gravel pathways and hilly sections can be challenging to navigate. The trails lead to different streets and locations in the community, including Grosvenor-Wentworth Park School. While dogs must be on-leash in some areas, there are also off-leash sections.

There is no question that Hemlock Ravine Park is a hidden gem in our community and one that is worth exploring.

DeWolf Park

Another easily accessible park in the community is DeWolf Park, located on Waterfront Drive in Bedford, on the Bedford Basin. The park is named after Harry George DeWolf, born in 1903 in Bedford, Nova Scotia, and considered one of Canada’s most distinguished naval officers. During his career, he became a Vice Admiral and Chief of Naval Staff.

The park offers something for everyone, including a boardwalk that winds along the waterfront, a huge playground area to please children of all ages, and even workout machines for those wanting some extra physical activity. The park has a large grassy area, and benches and picnic tables where people can sit, read, relax, and enjoy a bite to eat. With panoramic views of the Bedford Basin and the MacKay Bridge, it’s a wonderful place to enjoy the views, get some fresh air, and enjoy being outdoors.

On any given day - especially warm and sunny ones - people of all ages and fitness levels walk, run, ride bikes or push strollers in the park. Whatever your preferred outdoor activity, DeWolf Park delivers.

DeWolf Park is another gem in our community where it is hard to imagine you are just minutes away from the noise and activity of the city.

Why not make some plans to visit these community gems this summer. It’s pretty simple: put on some comfortable footwear and a hat, grab a bottle of water, and head out. You won’t be disappointed.
